Claude Champagne

Claude Champagne ( born May 27, 1891 in Montreal, † December 21, 1965 ) was a Canadian composer.

Champagne was music theory and piano students of Orpha -F. Deveaux and later by Romain- Octave Pelletier. Since the age of fourteen, he studied violin with Albert Chamberland. After the conclusion of the National Conservatory in Montreal, he taught piano and violin and gave private lessons in music theory and harmony. He was also a member of the Canadian Grenadier Guards band under Jean- Josaphat Gagnier.

From 1921 to 1929 he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with André Gedalge and Charles Koechlin. After that, he worked various music schools and at McGill University in Montreal as a music theory and composition teacher. Since 1942, he was assistant director of the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal. Among his pupils were Violet Archer, Jocelyne Binet, François Brassard, Maurice Dela, Marvin Duchow, Richard Eaton, Serge Garant, Rhené Jaque, Roger Matton, Pierre Mercure, François Morel, Clermont Pépin, Gilles Tremblay, Robert Turner and Jean Vallerand.

1964 Champagne was honored for his work and his work as a music teacher and sponsors with a " Claude Champagne Year "; the National Film Board of Canada produced the film Bonsoir Claude Champagne. and the CBC presented a Hommage à Claude Champagne.
