Claude of France

Claude de France ( born October 13, 1498 Romorantin; † July 20, 1524 in Blois ), German Claudia of France, from the House of Valois, was Countess of Soissons, Duchess of Brittany and Queen of France by marriage.

Life

The daughter of King Louis XII. of France and his second wife, Anne de Bretagne, thus Princess of France, also carried the title Countess of Soissons, Blois, Coucy, Etampes and Montfort. She was always sickly and suffered since birth under a disability. Her mother had been born ten more children, of which only eleven years her younger sister, Renée reached adulthood.

Anne de Bretagne betrothed her daughter early to Charles of Luxembourg in order not to let the Brittany fall of France. These contracted marriage, however, was canceled at the urging of Louise of Savoy in 1505 and 1506 Claude promised to Louise's son Francis of Orléans - Angoulême, a royal cousin, who was a French heir apparent absence of a son Louis. Existed between Louise de Savoy and Anne de Bretagne about enmity, so that Claude was married until after her mother's death with Franz. The marriage took place in the chapel of the castle of Saint- Germain -en- Laye on 18 May 1514. In addition to their popularity and a stronger claim to the throne Claude brought the Brittany as genetic material into the marriage.

After her father's death on January 1, 1515 Francis I. was King of France and his Queen Claude. The young queen was more to religion as interested in politics. In nine years of marriage, Claude Francis I. gave eight children, but died at the age of twenty-five years.

She was laying in the grave of the French kings, the Basilica of Saint -Denis, buried. In the sack of the Royal Tombs of Saint- Denis during the French Revolution to her grave was opened and looted on October 20, 1793, her remains were buried in a mass grave outside the church.

The plum Reine Claude ( greengage = Queen Claudia ) to be named in her honor.
