Claude U. Stone

Claudius Ulysses " Claude" Stone ( born May 11, 1879 Menard County, Illinois, † November 13, 1957 in Peoria, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Claude Stone attended the common schools and the Western Normal College at Bushnell. He then began a career in the teaching profession. First, he was a teacher in Menard County, then for two years in Brimfield Board of Education. During the Spanish- American War of 1898, he was a corporal in an infantry unit from Illinois. He was, until May 1899 stationed in Cuba. Between 1902 and 1910 acted as Stone School Board in Peoria County. He was also president of the Association of School Boards in Illinois. After studying law at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and at the George Washington University in Washington DC and his 1909 was admitted as a lawyer, he started working in Peoria in this profession.

Politically, Stone joined the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1910, he was elected in the 16th electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Joseph V. Graff on March 4, 1911. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1917 three legislative periods. During this time, the 16th and the 17th Amendment to the Constitution were ratified. In 1916 he was not re-elected.

Between 1917 and 1920 Stone was postmaster in Peoria. He then practiced as a lawyer again. From 1928 to 1925 he held the office of Master in Chancery of the District Court in Peoria County. He also gave 1938-1949 the newspaper out Peoria Star. He died on November 13, 1957 in Peoria.
