Claude Vignon

Claude Vignon ( born May 19, 1593 in Tours, † May 10, 1670 in Paris) was a French painter of the Baroque.

Life

Claude Vignon studied painting in Paris. In 1610 he went to Rome, where he was influenced by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, painted in chiaroscuro style, returned in 1625 as court painter to France and painted in the reign of King Louis XIII. and Cardinal Richelieu in the Louvre and the Palais Royal. He had two sons who were also painters, Claude François and Philippe.

His motives were scenes of saints and legends of antiquity. His works can be seen today in numerous museums, including the Louvre and the Museum of Fine Arts in Tours, Rennes and Rouen.
