Claudia (gens)

The Claudian (Latin Claudii or gens Claudia ) were one of the oldest Roman patrician families ( gentes maiores ).

For centuries, its members were active in the city and in the realm of leading digits that since the 4th century BC, with a plebeian branch often wore the nickname Marcellus ( the Warlike ). With the end of the 2nd century BC, another epithet occurred, Nero (strong, active ), the Roman Emperor Tiberius and also contributed Claudius. Tiberius and Claudius Nero were as members of the Julio- Claudian dynasty.

Traditionally, the origin of the family is seen in Attius clausus, a Sabines, who made peace with Rome and thus saw in an uncomfortable situation. That is why he preferred, around the year 504 to leave Regillus and his followers BC. Rome took him up, took his followers to citizens, gave them land and made Appius Claudius Sabinus ( the name in the Latin form ) for senator. An alternative derivation of the name leads to Claudus (Latin: lame, limping ) back.

Clodius was a more plebeian version of the name that was used by some members of the family to get a plebeian than patrician appearance, while Claudia ( and Clodia ) was used by the women.

In the German-speaking countries, the name came in the 16th century as a first name. In particular, the female form is often Claudia today.
