Clay County (Iowa)

The Clay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 16,667 inhabitants and a population density of 11.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Spencer.

Geography

The County is located in northwest Iowa, is in the north about 30 miles from Minnesota, and to the west about 70 miles from North Dakota and has an area of 1483 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Clay County was on 15 January 1851 as a free- designated - formed territory - but in reality populated by Indians.

It was named after Henry Clay, Jr. (1811-1847), a son of Henry Clay and officers who fell in the battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War in 1847.

Until October 1858 the County was also managed by the management of the Woodbury County.
