Clay County (Kansas)

Clay County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clay Center. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northeast Kansas, is located in the north about 40 miles from Nebraska and has an area of ​​1698 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County, Riley County, Geary County, Dickinson County, Ottawa County and Cloud County.

History

Clay County was formed on 20 March 1857 as original county of free territory. It was named after Henry Clay, an American politician, member of the House of Representatives, the Senate, Foreign Minister, several presidential candidate and opponent of slavery.

As the Republican River flows through the county from the northwest to the southwest, the construction of bridges played an important role in the history of the county. The first bridge was built in 1875 near Clay Center, the second in 1880 near Vining. Other bridges in Wakefield, Morganville, and Broughton followed. The first school was established in 1864 near Lincoln Creek. The first church was built in 1868 in Clay Center.
