Clay County (Kentucky)

Clay County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Manchester, which was named after the city of Manchester in England. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Kentucky, is in the south about 40 miles from Tennessee, located in the southeast about 30 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1220 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Owsley County, Perry County, Leslie County, Bell County, Knox County, Laurel County and Jackson County.

History

Clay County was formed on December 2, 1806 from parts of Floyd County, Knox County and Madison County. It was named for Green Clay, a general and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Virginia and Kentucky.

According to the census of 2000, there were 24 556 people in Clay County. Of these, 2,179 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 8,556 households and 6,442 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.9 percent white, 4.8 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.4 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,556 households out of which 36.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers, 24.7 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent of all households and 9.0 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.06.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.4 percent population under 18 years, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 32.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 111.7 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were statistically 112.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 16,271, and the median income for a family was $ 18,925. Males had a median income of $ 24,164, women $ 17,816. The per capita income was $ 9,716. 35.4 percent of families and 39.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 47.6 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 31.3 percent of those 65 years.
