Clay County (North Carolina)

Clay County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hayesville, which was named after a local politician named George Hayes.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme western North Carolina, on the south by Georgia and has an area of 571 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Macon County and Cherokee County.

The Clay County is divided into six townships: Brasstown, Hayesville, Hiwassee, Shooting Creek, Sweetwater and Tusquittee.

History

The Clay County was formed in 1861 from parts of Cherokee County. It was named after Henry Clay, an American politician, member of the Repräsententenhauses, of the Senate, Secretary of State and opponents of slavery. A total of five times he ran unsuccessfully for the office of U.S. President, where he partially failed already in the primaries.
