Clearfield County, Pennsylvania

Clearfield County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 83 382 inhabitants and a population density of 28 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clearfield.

History

Clearfield County was formed in 1804 from parts of Lycoming County and Huntingdon County. Three years later, three townships named Beccaria, Bradford and Chincleclamousche were formed in the then sparsely populated area in the Alleghany. 1812, the County became a separate administrative unit. In the following decades, numerous townships were formed ( see below). The recent start-ups were Bigler (1883 ) and Cooper ( 1884). The first borough called Clearfield was built in 1840, the last - Westover - 1895.

Clearfield in 1805 was the administrative center of the county of the same name. The first courthouse was built in 1814 and replaced in 1862 by the present brick building with clock tower (including cultivation of 1882). The current county jail was built in 1981, the predecessor of 1872 now serves as an office building.

After the Revolutionary War, the country was divided later in Clearfield County in plots of 250 to 1000 acres ( 1-4 km ²) and awarded in large part to war veterans. The first white man, Captain Edward Ricketts, settled around 1783 in the territory of present Bigler Township. The population of the county was largely carried out 1830-1880. German immigrants from the area of ​​Pirmasens settled since the 1830s in the area around Troutville down.
