Cleat (shoe)

A cleat (English cleat ) is the link between a bike shoe and a clipless pedal.

When racing bike pedals cleats are usually of high-strength plastic and are mounted under the smooth sole of the shoe, making it difficult to walk. In mountain bike pedals, they are usually made of steel or brass and ( at least partially ) embedded in the shoe sole to make walking easier.

On the market there are several click systems that are incompatible with each other, for example:

  • Shimano ( SPD for mountain and trekking bikes, SPD -SL for road bikes )
  • TIME
  • Crank Brothers
  • LOOK ( KEO, KEO Blade and Delta )
  • Fartlek

Cleats of the same system and manufacturer are also sometimes offered with different degrees of freedom: the angle of movement indicates how far the shoe can be moved in the holder.
