Cleostratus

Kleostratos of Tenedos ( ancient Greek Κλεόστρατος ὅ Τενέδιος Kleóstratos ho Tenédios ) was an astronomer of ancient Greece.

Life

The Life-history of Kleostratos are unknown, but it is believed he could have been a pupil of Thales of Miletus as this on Tenedos, home of Kleostratos, died. Thus, it would be dated to the 6th century BC. But not only the survival data are uncertain, his astronomical achievements are controversial and provides only vague.

Kleostratos wrote an astronomical poem, the Astronomia, of which only two verses have been preserved:

Other ancient authors report that he had been the first signs of the zodiac along the ecliptic, first the ram, and the shooter. He had also the first to recognize the two mentioned Haedi star in the constellation Auriga.

Censorinus says also Kleostrates have the Oktaedris, the eight-year calendar cycle, and not introduced Eudoxus of Cnidus. He also is said to have observed the solstices at Mount Ida.
