Cleto

Cleto is a place in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria area of ​​Italy with 1317 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location

Cleto is located 45 km south of Cosenza. The neighboring municipalities are Aiello Calabro, Amantea, Martirano (CZ), Nocera Terinese (CZ ), San Mango d' Aquino (CZ) and Serra d' Aiello. The city lies at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level at the foot of Mount St. Angelo, near the Tyrrhenian Sea.

History

The name of the city is told in a legend. During the War of Troy in the tenth century BC, the Queen of the Amazons Penthesilea was killed. Cleta her nurse heard the news, gave her an honorable burial, settled there and built a city by name, called Cletus, later Cleto.

Structures

  • The Normans built the village on the slopes of Monte Sant'Angelo and the castle overlooking the valley to the sea.
  • The Comforter Church was built in 1600, renovated in 1800 and has a bell tower with a tip from the seventeenth century. The ceiling frescoes are by Aloisio Aiello.
  • The church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from 1730 and is built in the Renaissance style with Baroque elements.
  • The Church of the Holy Rosary ( Church of the Most Holy Rosario ) is also known as Castel Lense Church and stands in the old town near the Burgtor.

Climate

The hillside location means a very dry climate with hot summers and mild winters. The vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean, many olive trees and in the field of Savuto orange and lemon trees. Oil production is one of the foundations of the local economy as well as tourism and agriculture in general. Of great interest is the fauna of the area with several species of raptors. There are also foxes, wild boars and wolves in the mountain area.

Traffic

By car Cleto is on the Autostrada Salerno -Reggio Calabria Falerna exit, then continue north to reach Campora San Giovanni and then 10 km of mountain road. The Lamezia Terme airport is 28 km away, there is a bus from there about Campora San Giovanni, Cletus and Aiello Calabro. The Amantea train station is 16 km away from Cleto away.
