Cleveland Abbe

Cleveland Abbe ( born December 3, 1838 in New York City, NY, USA, † October 28, 1916 in Chevy Chase, Maryland ) was an American astronomer and meteorologist first, considered the father of the U.S. Weather Bureau.

As of September 1, 1869 Abbe gave out private weather bulletins that were in the area of ​​Cincinnati. On February 9, 1870, the U.S. Congress authorized the weather service. Abbe was at that time the only person in the USA who already had experience in the preparation of weather maps based on telegraphic reports. He therefore offered an important position in the new authority, which he accepted and on January 3, 1871. He was often the official weather forecaster. Abbe was a strong advocate of time zones on Earth.

He was on 13 January 1888 the founding members of the National Geographic Society.
