Cleveland County (Arkansas)

The Cleveland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rison.

The County is located in south-central Arkansas and has an area of ​​1551 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Cleveland County was formed on April 17, 1873 from parts of Bradley County, Dallas County, the Jefferson County and Lincoln County as Dorsey County. It was named after the original Stephen W. Dorsey, a U.S. Senator from Arkansas. In 1885 it was renamed in Cleveland County, in honor of the recently elected President Grover Cleveland ( 1837-1908 ).

On April 25, 1864 during the American Civil War, the Battle of Marks' Mills took place here between Confederate and Union troops, which ended in favor of the Confederates.

1889 a fire destroyed the County Courthouse in Toledo. The places Rison, Kingsland and New Edinburg competed for the county seat. After several entries, the State Supreme Court ruled on 11 April 1891 for the City of Rison.

Demographic data
