Clifford Jarvis

Clifford Jarvis ( born August 26, 1941 in Boston, † 26 November 1999 ) was an American jazz drummer of the hard bop and free jazz.

Life and work

Jarvis came from a musical family. His grandfather and his father were both trumpet and support his desire to become a drummer. He studied at the Berklee College in the 1950s, and took on plates with Chet Baker, Randy Weston, Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Jackie McLean and Elmo Hope. He played with Grant Green, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk and worked from 1962 to 1976 with Sun Ra. Later he played with Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Simmons, Alice Coltrane, Kenny Drew Sr., Walter Davis, Archie Shepp and Siegfried Kessler.

Since 1983 he has lived in London, where he led his group Prophets of jazz. Patty Waters, former lover and mother of a son together, has devoted him her "Song for Clifford ".
