Clifford Luyk

Clifford Luyk Diem ( born June 28, 1941 in Syracuse, New York, United States), is a former Spanish- American professional basketball player and coach. The 2.02 -meter center spent most of his career at Real Madrid and was in the 1960s and 1970s as one of the best players in Europe.

Clifford Luyk began his career in the University of Florida, for its basketball team, he played three seasons long in the Southeastern Conference. In the summer of 1962, the then 21 -year-old has been committed by the Spanish club Real Madrid and quickly rose to one of the major players on the European basketball. With the Merengues he could break the dominance of the teams of the Soviet Union and the first win the European Champions Cup in season 1963/64. Overall, he scored six wins with Real in the highest European club competition. In addition, he won 14 Spanish league titles and ten cup wins. Famous Luyk was mainly for his hook shot. Because of his many achievements, he is led by the Euro League as one of the 50 most important figures of European basketball.

National

Clifford Luyk, with the Miss Spain (1966) and Miss Europe (1967 ) Paquita Torres is married, took in 1968 to the Spanish citizenship. With the national team of the Iberians, he played 150 games at the European Championships 1973, he won the silver medal.

Coach

Luyk, who worked from 1983 to 1990 Real Madrid as co- and youth coach, took over in the 1990/91 season for the first time the post of head coach at local rivals Atlético de Madrid - Villalba. After another year at Juver Murcia in 1992, he returned to Real Madrid back. With the Brussels residents, he won two times in a row the championship and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992. During the season 1992/93 he also reached the final four of the European Cup of Champions.
