Clifford Truesdell

Clifford Ambrose Truesdell III ( born February 18, 1919 in Los Angeles, † January 14, 2000 in Baltimore ) was an American mathematician, writer, historian of science and mathematics, and natural philosopher.

Truesdell graduated from Caltech, where he made his Bachelor of Science ( BS) in Mathematics and Physics and in 1942 the master ( MS), 1941. He also made in 1942 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Brown University.

The Doctor ( Ph.D.) in mathematics was awarded to him at Princeton in 1943. He worked from 1944 to 1946 at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT ( the radar operational research ) and then to 1950 at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC as head of the group of theoretical mechanics. In 1950 he became Professor of Mechanics at the University of Indiana. In Baltimore In 1961 he was professor of " Rational Mechanics" at Johns Hopkins University and remained there until his retirement.

Truesdell was considered a leading authority on the history of mechanics and was the editor of two journals, the " Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis " from 1957 and " Archive for History of Exact Sciences" from 1960 ( which he founded ). He has published 26 monographs, 268 scientific publications and numerous essays and reviews. Also contributed to its wider cultural background as a scholar at - especially in the cultural history of the early modern period to the 18th century. Truesdell was editor of four volumes in the complete works of Leonhard Euler.

Prices

In 1963, the Bingham Medal was awarded for services to the rheology of Truesdell. The Theodore Von Karman Award was awarded to him in 1996 and 1978, the Birkhoff Prize. In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver ( How to Understand and Teach the Logical Structures and the History of Classical Thermodynamics ).
