Clinical linguistics

The Clinical linguistics as a branch of applied linguistics deals with the diagnosis and treatment of interference images of language, speech, swallowing, and oral and written communication.

Training

In-depth linguistic knowledge with medical, educational and psychological knowledge about the cognitive and anatomical bases of language acquisition, language processing and language production is the basis for a career in clinical linguistics. Clinical linguists usually have an interdisciplinary higher education with an emphasis in the areas of language development and disorders of speech motor control.

Furthermore, extensive knowledge of the theoretical and descriptive linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics, Phonetics, phonetics and neuro neurology, neuropsychology and medical psychology and pedagogy are acquired. Also technical disciplines such as computer science, physics and mathematics are included. Rounding out the training through course-related clinical placements.

Activity places

Clinical linguists working in hospitals and private practices, are diagnosed and treated speech disorder, or they work in research and teaching.

Also a practice branch is possible after approval by the Medical Service of the statutory health insurance. As a prerequisite for health insurance license shall be certified by the Federation Clinical linguists (BKL ).
