Clinton County (Illinois)

The Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 37,762 inhabitants and a population density of 30.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carlyle. The largest recreation area is the Carlyle Lake and its surrounding area.

The Clinton County is located in the Metro - East called the eastern part of the metropolitan area of Greater St. Louis the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri.

Geography

The County is located in southern Illinois and has an area of 1304 square kilometers, of which 76 square kilometers are water surface.

Mostly in Clinton County is located with the Carlyle Lake, which was created by damming the Kaskaskia River, the largest reservoir of Illinois.

History

The first settlement was made in 1811 by a Mr. Hill. The Hill - block house was the first recorded building and stood on the site of present-day Carlyle. Through the land of Goshen led Trace, who was an old Indian trail to a salt mine. When in 1820 the first road was built from Vincennes to St. Louis, she used this path as the basis. Hill was also the first to introduce a ferry service across the Kaskaskia River. 1817 were added more settlers and 1824 to 1,100 people lived here, including 137 in Carlyle.

On December 27, 1814 County was formed from parts of the counties Washington, Bond, and Fayette and named after DeWitt Clinton, mayor of New York and later governor of the state of New York.

1857 was laid a railway line in the area by the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad and 1878 already lived several thousand people in the County. The next jump of the settlement began in 1911 by the oil boom.
