Clinton County (Michigan)

Clinton County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) St. Johns.

Geography

The County is located just south of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1488 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gratiot County, Shiawassee County, Ingham County, Eaton County and Ionia County.

History

Clinton County was formed in 1831 as an original county of free territory. It was named after DeWitt Clinton, a governor of New York and responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal.

According to the census of 2000, there were 64 753 people in Clinton County. Of these, 805 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 23,653 households and 17,976 families. The population density was 44 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.40 percent White, 0.63 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.81 percent from other races groups; 1.17 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 23,653 households out of which 37.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 24.0 percent were non-families. 19.8 percent of all households and 7.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.12.

28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.3 percent 18 to 24 years 29.2 percent between 25 and 44, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 10.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 52,806, and the median income for a family $ 60,491. Males have a median income of $ 42,379, women $ 31,065. The per capita income was $ 22,913. 3.3 percent of families and 4.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
