Clinton L. Merriam

Clinton Levi Merriam ( March 25, 1824 in Leyden, New York, † February 18, 1900 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Clinton Levi Merriam was born about nine years after the end of the British - American War in Lewis County. He attended community schools and the Copenhagen Academy in Copenhagen. Then he went after trading transactions in Utica. In 1847 he moved to New York City, where he pursued a job as an importer. He was in 1860 in the banking industry operates. During the Civil War he returned in 1864 from Leyden back. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1870 for the 42nd Congress Merriam was in the 20th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Addison H. Laflin on March 4, 1871. In 1872 he was a candidate in the 21st electoral district of New York for the 43rd Congress. After a successful election, he resigned on March 4, 1873 the successor to Ellis H. Roberts. Since he gave up a re-election bid in 1874, he retired after March 3, 1875 from the Congress.

Merriam retired from active business life and spent his retirement on his estate Homewood in Locust Grove. He died on February 18, 1900 during a visit to Washington, DC and was buried in the Hill Cemetery in Port Leyden Leyden. The zoologist Clinton Hart Merriam was his son.
