Clomethiazole (trade names in Germany and Switzerland: Distraneurin ®, manufactured by AstraZeneca), is a thiazole derivative, similar to the Thiazolanteil of thiamine (vitamin B1). Due to its sedative, hypnotic and anticonvulsant properties, it is used as a drug from the group of psychotropic drugs.

Clomethiazole is applied:

  • In patients at older ages with agitation by organic brain syndrome
  • With severe insomnia in older age
  • Under steady state conditions for the control of heavy alcohol withdrawal symptoms, in order to avoid a delirium tremens

Clomethiazole is next to diazepam, a drug of first choice in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and Alkoholentzugsdelirs, both in clinics and in internal medical facilities. It should be noted that the application will only briefly, since clomethiazole has a high potential for dependence. The drug should only be administered stationary, as it can cause a severe attenuation of respiration and circulation among other things. It must also be ensured that there is no simultaneous alcohol consumption takes place, which can lead to violent interactions. Of particular importance is the fact that the dosage must be continuously adapted to the individual patient and the symptoms. Since an alcohol withdrawal, with the risk of delirium is generally a life-threatening condition and thus already represents an indication for emergency hospitalization, does the one the other.
