Clones

Clones ( Irish: Cluain Eois ) is a small town in the west of County Monaghan in Ireland. The city's population in 2006 was including the rural catchment area in 2889 people.

History

Clones was originally a monastic settlement in the 6th century, until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII The ruins of an abbey dating from the 12th century can still be seen in the city.

The town of Clones was economically severely affected by the partition of Ireland in 1921, as it lies on the border with County Fermanagh, which is part of Northern Ireland. This clone was cut off from its economic catchment area, which is now in Northern Ireland.

The sandstone cross on the Diamond in Clones is a combination of two separate crosses the Ulster Group from the 10th century. The cross fragments are at a height of 4.57 m and belong to the remains of a monastery in Clones.
