Clonezilla

Clonezilla is a free and free computer program of the Taiwan National Center for High Performance Computing ( NCHC ) for the manufacture of 1:1 images from PC hard drives.

Particulars

The program is for the " cloning" of uniform software configurations on multiple computers, for example in the corporate environment, designed. It is based on Debian Linux. The functionality is similar to the commercial products, such as Symantec's Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image and the free G4L.

Clonezilla Live

Clonezilla Live does not need to be installed, but starts from a stand-alone CD or a bootable USB flash drive "live". About a text-based menu system, the user can copy individual partitions or complete hard drive and restore it later. The partition or disk image is stored as a file on a different disk (hard disk, USB stick, DVD). Supports internal and external hard drives and network access storage media, for example, via NFS, SSH or Samba servers.

Clonezilla Server Edition

With Clonezilla SE can be equipped with an identical software configuration across a network a large number of computers simultaneously. This version is used in conjunction with a DRBL server ( Diskless Remote Boot in Linux).

Features

For the actual copy Clonezilla accesses various ( free ) programs back:

  • Ntfsclone - for NTFS file systems
  • Drbl - winroll - by computer name, group membership and security identifier ( SID) to automatically adjust from cloned Windows systems
  • Part Clone - FAT, NTFS, ext2/ext3, ext4, reiserfs, xfs, HFS Plus, UFS2, VMFS Version 0.2.3
  • Partimage - FAT, ext2/ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, ...
  • Dd - sector-by- sector copy for non-supported file systems

For partitions with file systems mentioned above only occupied sectors of the disk are backed up. LVM2 under GNU / Linux is also supported. The images generated with ntfsclone or dd can be to read individual files from the images ( or extract ) inserted (or mounted).

If the target drive is larger than the source drive to be transmitted, the partition must be increased to the target drive when the whole disk space will be used after the transfer. In this case it is advisable, for example, to work with Parted Magic, which has both Clonezilla as well, among them " partitioning tool " GParted on board.

Benefits

Compared to the single solutions ( ntfsclone, Partimage, dd) provides Clonezilla Live a uniform and bundled surface for various file systems. It allows much like the purchase of software products network requests that are not or only indirectly are possible with regard to these individual solutions. Furthermore, the most famous images are directly compressed if necessary, and split into files of a certain size.
