Clonmel

Clonmel ( Irish: Cluain Meala ) is a city in the south of County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland and the administrative headquarters of South Tipperary. It has 15,840 inhabitants ( 2011).

Location

The town lies in a valley that is bordered by a series of mountains. The Comeragh Mountains ( Sléibhte to Chomaraigh ) are in the south, while to the east of the city of Slievenamon ( Sliabh na mBan ) is. By Clonmel Suir flows.

History

In the Middle Ages Clonmel grew very strong, and still many remains can be found from this period. Once the city was completely surrounded by a city wall, from only a small part is still preserved today. Oliver Cromwell besieged Clonmel 1650 and took it eventually, albeit under heavy losses to their own.

Economy and Transport

The city has always had a rich business. Inland navigation on the River Suir in the past was the basis for rich trading. Later Clonmel was on the rail link Waterford - Limerick connected; The city also lies on the N24 between Limerick and Waterford.

Today Clonmel in Ireland is primarily known for the production of cider variety Bulmers Original Irish Cider, which is marketed outside of Ireland under the name Magners to avoid confusion with the eponymous English Bulmers Original.

Furthermore, the pharmaceutical company STADA operates a manufacturing facility in Clonmel.

Attractions

One of the most striking buildings in the city is the Old St. Mary's Church. How many churches in Ireland it has been (probably in the 13th century ) built and later renovated and rebuilt many times long ago. Soon after the building of the church was secured, as the city for the Earls of Ormonde, and later the Earls of Kildare gained a strategic importance. During the siege by Cromwell some parts of this fortified church were destroyed.
