Clorinda, Formosa

Clorinda is the capital of the department Pilcomayo in the province of Formosa in the north of Argentina. It lies on the border with Paraguay, 115 kilometers north- north-east of the provincial capital Formosa, and has 47 004 inhabitants.

Location

Clorinda is located on the west bank of the Pilcomayo River, which forms at this point the border with Paraguay, and ten kilometers before it joins the Río Paraguay. Clorinda opposite the Paraguayan capital Asunción. Both cities are connected by the Puente Internacional San Ignacio de Loyola, which was named after the founder of the Jesuit order.

Clorinda is also a point of intersection of Ruta Nacional 11 and Ruta Nacional 86

The surrounding area of the city belongs to the humid part of the Gran Chaco, a savanna and woodland with subtropical climate.

History

The city was founded in 1900 by Manfredi Hertelendy. This was preceded by the construction of several forts in the border region to secure the borders after the war of the Triple Alianza. After the founding of the city grew rapidly to become the second largest city in the province of Formosa.

Economy

The city is dominated by the service and trade sectors. A special role is played by the through traffic and trade with nearby Paraguay.
