Close stool

The toilet seat was until the early 20th century, when the toilets were still outside of the home or even the house were usually used to perform bowel movements or urination within their own four walls. At the time, the toilet seat is usually a closed box or a cabinet with an opening on the upper surface. Plugged this opening was a hinged lid. The chair contained a tin or earthenware pot, which caught the feces. Some commode chairs could also be used as a bedside table.

Nowadays, commode chairs are frequently used in the elderly. Especially people with a disability benefit from this. Commode chairs are acknowledged by the care funds as nursing aids and listed in the resource directory of the statutory health insurance. There are also toilet wheelchairs that are used as a shower chair.
