Cluj-Napoca Hintz House

In the Mauksch - Hintz house on the main square of Cluj once the first pharmacy was opened in the city. Today the building is a listed building. Named were the most significant owner: Tobias Mauksch and George Hintz.

The pharmacy was founded in 1573 and was until 1735 the only pharmacy in town. It was more than a century operated by so-called provisors who were elected by the city council and the unwound transactions on behalf of the city and through their funds. The city sold ( privatized ) the pharmacy around 1700. Was the first owner of Presov ( Eperjes, Presov ) derived Jacob Fojth. He was followed by Zipser Samuel Schwartz. His cousin, who in Käsmark ( Késmárk, Kesmarok ) in the Zips (today Slovakia) born pharmacist Mauksch Tobias ( 1727-1802 ) purchased the house in 1749. The highly respected man held several public offices in his town and spent four years Member of Parliament. He, his son of the same Tobias Samuel Mauksch (1769-1805) and the younger son of Johann Martin Mauksch (1783-1817) operated the - since 1760 " Imperial privileged ." - Pharmacy to 1817 in 1822, the building became the property of Daniel Apothekenprovisors Szlaby about. His widow Eleanor ( who was married to his first marriage with Johann Martin Mauksch ) bequeathed in 1835 the pharmacy of their daughter Mathilda Augusta Mauksch, wife of originating from Sighisoara Lutheran. Pastor Georg Gottlieb Hintz. Their son, George Hintz (1840-1890) took over in 1863, the pharmacy and the house. They were until the mid 20th century in the possession of the family of pharmacists Hintz. The pharmacy was called " Saint George " and in 1902 the entire building provided by the city council under monument protection.

The classical front of the house was built in the 1820s, the ground floor and the basement from the days of Renaissance art. In the former offices of the house there are frescoes from 1752, which outline the history of pharmacy. These frescoes were restored in 1898 by András Koleszár.

In 1948 the house was expropriated by the Communist government without financial compensation and the pharmacy was closed. The Pharmacy Museum in 1954, on the initiative of Klaus Burger medical and pharmacy historian Prof. Dr. Sámuel Izsák ( 1915-2007 ), supported by Prof. Dr. Valeriu Bologa to life. 1960, the former main showroom on the corner was destroyed by the still existing pedestrian crossing. Because of political difficulties during the Ceauşescu regime emigrated all descendants of the Hintz Family in the Federal Republic of Germany. After the political changes of 1989, this applied for the return of the legitimate possession, which will take place shortly.

Currently located in the building except for a few private homes, retail shops as well as the Historical Pharmacy Museum. In this there are more than 3000 exhibits - including pots, presses, mortars, scales, laboratory utensils, furniture, medicines, books, old recipes and medieval stamp. In the basement there is the so-called " witch's kitchen " in which one can imagine, such as medicine concocted centuries ago. In 2000, the pharmacy was closed for two years due to a water pipe burst.
