CLUMEQ
The supercomputer CLUMEQ was completed by Sun Microsystems in 2009 and located in Quebec, Canada. The basis for the new data center of CLUMEQ Supercomputing Center is a silo in which, until recently, a particle accelerator was housed.
Construction and equipment
Building a Data Center in a silo was a new task for the developers. The advantage of this design is that one can better cool the system, as in a conventional data center. The computers were arranged in a ring on three floors. This results on the outer side of the round building a cold air zone.
The machine type belongs to Sun Blade system (Model Sun Blade 6048 ). The main memory has a size of 19200 GB, the processor is an Intel Xeon EM64T X55xx (Nehalem -EP) 2800 MHz ( 11.2 GFlops ).
Research
The CLUMEQ supercomputer is used for research and analysis among others in the used in the following areas:
- Materials research and nanotechnology
- Astrophysics and Cosmology
- Climate and weather forecasts
- Life Sciences
- Bioinformatics
- For the calculation of state variables of flows
