Style

The guitar riffs of their first album are often compared with those of Helmet, as they are very strong and impulsive, which can be heard especially in the songs La curandera and promoter from the album Blast Tyrant. In addition, atypical of the genre are frequently changing and listening to odd time signatures. Examples would be, for example, the song Burning Beard or Motherless Child, which alternate between 6/8 and 7/8. The lyrics, mostly written by singer Neil Fallon themselves are sung seriously and aggressively before all things. Actually, however, in the texts very much humor and word games are included, such as excerpts from the show song Cypress Grove, also from Blast Tyrant: "(...) Holy Diver, where you at? There's a woman on the hill in a wide brimmed has With a shotgun, 44, And a big blood hound in the back of a jacked up Ford (...) You better keep on running Bukka They're playing you for succotash and your stash is gone ", just like a line from " Subtle Hustle "from" Blast Tyrant ": " I got your number, I steal your thunder, I got your mother's maiden name tattooed on my arm "

On the part of the trade press has been noted that Clutch with each album more retro sound than on the previous one, which reached its previous peak to "From Beale Street To Oblivion". This sound is mainly due to the production as intended. The band abandoned the 2007 album on a digital production and opted for the tape recorder. Was reinforced, the use of a Hammond B3 organ, on tour have Clutch also still a harmonica player doing what is intended to emphasize the bluesy sound in some passages. This album is now well on the creative high point of the band, a mix of rock, blues and jazz.
