Clutha River

The Clutha River near Roxburgh

The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand, and the longest of New Zealand's South Island.

It flows over a length of 340 kilometers, the Otago region. The Clutha River is the outflow of Lake Wanaka. It is fed also by the Hawea River - the outflow of Lake Hawea - and the Kawarau River - the outflow of Lake Wakatipu - and numerous smaller rivers. Its mouth is located near Balclutha. In its course the Clutha River is dammed to Lake Dunstan and the Lake Roxburgh for power generation. Below Balclutha is the island of Inch Clutha.

The river's name is derived from Cluaidh from, the Scottish Gaelic name of the current flowing through Glasgow Clyde, and was probably given to him by the schottischstämmigen settlers of the region.
