Clyfford Still

Clyfford Still ( born November 30, 1904 in Grandin, North Dakota, † June 23, 1980 in New York) was an American painter. He is assigned to the style of Abstract Expressionism.

Biography and Works

After completing his studies at the University of Spokane in 1933, he taught at Washington State University in Pullman until 1941, painting, art history and aesthetics.

Mid-1930s had Clyfford Still already begun to paint semi-abstract images, and developed in the following years his style increasingly toward abstraction.

From 1941 to 1943 Clyfford Still worked in the defense industry in California and continued his teaching activity in the years 1943-1945 in Richmond, Virginia, continues. He then moved to New York, where he became friends with Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.

His paintings, which he now painted in the abstract expressionist style were first presented in a solo exhibition at the New York gallery Art of This Century, Peggy Guggenheim. This exhibition made ​​Clyfford Still known and famous.

His next teaching led him for the years 1946-1950 to San Francisco at the Californian School of Fine Arts. Eleven years, he then returned to New York, where he lived increasingly isolated and in the years 1952-1959 even refused all public exhibitions of his works. In 1959, Clyfford Still was nevertheless participated in the documenta II in Kassel.

1961, drew the painter, who is considered one of the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism, in the U.S. state of Maryland back in order to work in peace, far away from the art world.

Exhibitions of his works rejected the artistic loner Still from almost consistently, picture sales, he reduced to a minimum. The aura of the work, its " life-giving power ," he looked at risk. It so happens that few museums in Europe have works by the artist.

On November 18, 2011, in Denver, Colorado opened, designed by American architect Brad Cloepfil The Clyfford Still Museum.
