Co Hoedeman

Jacobus Willem "Co" Hoedeman ( born August 1, 1940 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch animator who lives and works since 1965 in Canada.

Life

Hoedeman broke with 15 years out of school and started earning his living as a retoucher of photographs in a print shop. He turned the film work and learned the basics of filmmaking in various small companies, he worked as an animation assistant at Multi movie, later Cinecentrum. At the same time he attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and the School of Photography in The Hague and at the age of 25 years Hoedeman went to Canada in 1965 and was employed at the National Film Board of Canada as a production assistant. His film debut was in 1967 with the educational film Continental Drift, in 1969 followed by the first short film in French-speaking division of the NFB, Oddball, a film with puppets made ​​of wire.

Hoedemann went in 1970 for four months in Czechoslovakia, where he studied puppet animation. Back in Canada, he was inspired by the art of Iqaluit and the Puvirnituq to a series of short animated films under the title An Eskimo Legend, dealing with legends of the Inuit. For this, he worked closely with Inuit artists. His biggest success was the 1978 stop-motion short film Le château de sable, was honored for the Hoedeman among other things an Oscar.
