Coal River at Upper Falls

The Coal River arises in Alum Creek at the confluence of Big Coal River (right) and Little Coal River (left). From there it flows in a north- northwesterly direction in numerous meanders to Tornado over to Saint Albans, where it flows into the Kanawha River flowing westward. The Coal River has a length of 30 km and drains an area of about 2280 km ². At the level of the Tornado average discharge is 35 m³ / s

The river and its two source rivers are a popular destination for canoeists and kayakers.
