Coalgate is a city with the status of City and also the administrative center ( county seat ) of the Coal County in the U.S. state of Oklahoma.

Geography

Coalgate is located approximately 160 kilometers southeast of Oklahoma City and 65 kilometers north of Durant. The road connecting U.S. Highway 75 runs through the city. To the west is an open prairie landscape connects.

History

The city was founded in 1889 on the territory of the Choctaw and first in honor of William Liddle, who discovered a profitable coal mine in the region, " Liddle " called. Three railway lines touched on the city and transported coal in other parts of the country. The theme here was " A GATE to wealth from the COAL Industry" ( A door to prosperity by the coal industry). For two words of this motto, the city was renamed in 1890 to its present name Coalgate. Beginning of the 20th century lived up to 3500 people in the city. Today the coal industry no longer plays a role and in Coalgate are small and medium-sized factories located and there are farms.

Demography

In 2012 a population of 1976 persons was determined, which means a weakening by 1.4 % over the year 2000. The average age of the residents was in 2012 with 38.7 years below the average of Oklahoma, which was 40.6 years. Approximately 16.6% of the population is of Indian descent.

Among the immigrant groups during the beginnings of the town came from England 8.8%, 7.9% Irish and 4.9 % from Germany.
