On August 16, 1982, the Statute of Autonomy of the Canaries ( down rules Autonomía de Canarias ) was published in the Spanish Official Gazette. This created the Spanish Parliament, the Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias as a state organ. In Article 6, paragraph 2 of the Act, the coat of arms is determined.

The coat of arms described in the Statute of Autonomy draws on previously used for the Canary Islands coat of arms. Main elements were the seven islands, shown in silver, on a blue ground and the dogs as a plate holder. Coat of arms from the period before 1982 can be found in various buildings in the Canary Islands. For example, at the 1895 completed Civil Hospital (now Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre ) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife or the Concert Hall of Sociedad Musical Santa Cecilia (now Parlamento de Canarias ) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Even before the Canary Islands autonomy a coat of arms of the Canary Islands has been used on official statements.

The legal definition

The article 6, paragraph 2 of the autonomy statute of the Canary Islands describes the coat of arms as follows: there are seven silver islands in a blue field. They are two, two, two and a uniformly arranged. The last is located in the tip. There is a golden crown and above a silver ribbon with the motto " Océano " in black above the shield. Supporters are two dogs in their color. You wear a collar. (En campo de azur trae siete islas de plata bien ordenadas, dos, dos, dos y una, esta última en punta. Como timbre una corona de oro real, surmontada de una cinta de plata con el lema " Océano " de sable y como soportes dos canes en su color encollarados. ) This description of the coat of arms in the Statute of Autonomy leaves many design variants for example the shape of the islands that form the dogs or just the exact color. Even the shape of the shield is not specified. This openness admitted that the black and white version of the crest has always been adapted to the prevailing taste.

Since 2005, use the authorities of the Canary Islands (eg, construction signs, car graphics, work clothes ) Printed materials and other public appearances a highly simplified form of the coat of arms.
