The coat of arms of Nigeria was awarded on 20 May 1960 by the British Queen Elizabeth II.

Description

The coat of arms shows in black and a silver shaft tiller and above the shield a silver-green crest with auffliegendem red eagle. The plate holder are two silver studs; they stand on a green pedestal with scattered red crocuses. On the golden ribbon below the coat of arms is written in black, capital letters of the English heraldic motto:

Symbolism

The crest shows a shield with a silver shaft tiller. It represents the two main rivers of Nigeria: the Niger and Benue to that continue to flow together after their confluence. The black color symbolizes the sign 'good Nigerian earth. "

The two horses that hold the shield, symbolizing dignity, while the eagle perched on the sign, a symbol of peace.

The white- green Helmwulst on the sign above repeated the colors of the flag of Nigeria.

Green stands for agriculture as an important economic factor of the country, the black color of the shield symbolizes the Nigerian soil. The red flowers in the grass under the shield are crocuses, the National Flower of Nigeria.
