Coat of arms of Tunisia

Since 2 September 1989, a version of the coat of arms, in all fields show a golden ground exists.

The coat of arms of Tunisia shows in chief in a light blue Punic galley on blue lake; the rest of the plate is divided: the right in a black gold lion wearing a silver sword, left in gold black scales. On the shield a white banner with the state motto is in Arabic نظام, حرية, عدالة Nizam, ḥurriyya, ʿ Adala, order, freedom, justice '. The coat of arms was adopted a few months after Tunisia gained its independence on 21 June 1956 and since then has been subject to some minor changes, most recently in 1963, the three fields symbolize the three terms of the state motto: . The galley stands for the freedom ( and the Carthaginian history of the region ) the lion for the order and the balance as a symbol of justice. The plaque with crescent and star is a symbol of Islam and the main component of the flag of Tunisia as well as a number of other flags of the Islamic world.
