Coat of arms of Ukraine

The coat of arms of Ukraine is provided by Article 20, adopted on 26 June 1996 Constitution of Ukraine in duplicate:

Small National Coat of Arms

As a Small State Emblem of the golden trident ( Ukr тризуб, Trysub ) is set on a blue escutcheon. He goes back to the emblems of Rurik, the princes of Kievan Rus, which were depicted on their coins. In the present form, it was the sign Wolodymyrs the Great. The meaning of the symbol is unclear, but it is believed that it dates back to a stylized falcon and possibly Tatar origin.

Status of Trysub as a national symbol of Ukraine dates back to the beginnings of the Ukrainian nation-building in the 19th century. For state symbol he was, as at the initiative of the historian Mykhailo Hruschewskyj - at that time President of the Zentralna Rada of the Ukrainian People's Republic - the Trysub on 22 March 1918 adopted as national coat of arms. This tried Hruschewskyj and Zentralna Rada, a connecting line between the Ukrainian People's Republic and the medieval kingdom of Kiev, Kievan Rus', built, to provide the young nation-state with time-honored traditions.

In the adoption of this symbol a State continuity of the Kievan Rus on the Principality of Galicia - Volhynia, the Cossack Hetmanate of the 17th century and the short-lived Ukrainian Republic was constructed.

About the "original " meaning of the symbol, there are a large number of legends. What is striking is its resemblance to the trident of Neptune. Ukrainian school children are taught today, in Trysub one could the word ВОЛЯ ( Ukr Volya, freedom ) read.

Great State Coat of Arms

The Great State Emblem to the Constitution as the main element, the Small State Coat of Arms. As a further element of the Constitution writes the coat of arms of the Army of the Zaporozhian Cossacks before ( a Cossack with sword and musket ). The Great State Emblem requires the adoption of a constitutional majority of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.
