Coats Island

Coats Iceland ( Inuktitut: Akpatordjuark ) is an uninhabited island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago -. The island is located in the extreme north of Hudson Bay, between Southampton and Mansel Iceland. The 130 km long and 5498 km ² large island belongs politically to the Canadian territory of Nunavut ranks among the largest islands of Canada an the 24th Place.

Named after the island is a working for the Hudson 's Bay Company captain, William Coats, who visited the island between 1727 and 1751 regularly.

Coats Iceland is one of the last settlements of the extinct around 1902 Sallirmiut that may last members of the Dorset culture.

The relatively flat island - the highest elevation, located at the northeastern tip of the island, reached only 182 m - is since 1920 an important sanctuary for caribou (Rangifer tarandus ). From here, caribou are relocated to Southampton Island, where the populations were previously eradicated.
