Coats of arms of Cyprus

The coat of arms of the Republic of Cyprus shows a yellow shield a white dove with a green olive branch in its beak. Under the dove, the year 1960 appears in black. To sign up entwines a two-piece green wreath.

The warm yellow color stands for the once rich copper deposits of the island, the metal gave (Latin for " Cuprum " ) and the name, the two olive branches represent the two communities in Cyprus, the dove as a peace symbol. The design goes back to the Turkish Cypriots Ismet Güney, who is also the designer of the flag of the Republic of Cyprus.

History

Immediately after the independence of the island in 1960, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, the Vice-President Fazil Küçük asked to define the state symbols of the island. Küçük commissioned his friend, teacher Ismet Güney to draw up a draft, which was then actually adopted.

Since the occupation of the north by Turkish troops in 1974 and condemned by the UN Security Council proclamation of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, the coat of arms is used there in a modified form as an emblem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
