COBRA (avant-garde movement)

CoBrA (also Cobra or COBRA ) was an existing 1948-1951 international group of artists.

History

The group was founded on November 8, 1948 in a cafe in Paris. In addition to the initiators Asger Jorn and Constant also Christian Dotremont, Joseph Noiret, Karel Appel, Carl -Henning Pedersen and Corneille were present. The group joined by and by other artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Eugène Brands, Karl Otto Götz Jan Nieuwenhuys, Lucebert and Anton Rooskens. The name was formed from the initial letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, from which came the founding members. In addition to the naming similarity to the poisonous snake cobra illustrate the progressiveness with which the artists worked against academic and societal norms.

The members were intent on moving away from Surrealism and a revival of expressionism with the stylistic devices of the Informal. Stylistic elements of folk art and childishly naive techniques combined with abstract -figurative color and shapes. The artists joined an ideology that turned against bourgeois and academic performances. Your images should arise spontaneously and convey the rejection of any notion of traditional aesthetics. Two major exhibitions (1949 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and 1951 at the Palais des Beaux -Arts in Liège ) documented the work of the artists group.

The group saw itself as a political group working. Here they propagated particularly international cooperation and brought out ten issues of the international journal CoBrA, which was designed mainly by Asger Jorn.

The group was able, through their work not win the popularity of the general public, but it came in 1949 at the unveiling of a mural in the canteen of the Amsterdam town house to so strong protests among the population, that the artwork was made only 10 years later, the public accessible again. Also an issue of the journal and the opening of the exhibition in Liege led to criticism and turmoil.

The group broke up in 1951 after illness from Asger Jorn and Christian Dotremont.
