Coccosteus
Coccosteus
- North America
- Europe
The extinct fish Coccosteus belonged to the placoderms. Coccosteus was a smaller relative of Dunkleosteus. He had a length of about 40 cm and was widespread in the Devonian in the area of present-day Europe and North America. Coccosteus was a fast swimmer and lived predatory or aasfressend on the seabed. The animal had a streamlined, scaleless body, paired fins on the fuselage side, a strong tail fin and even a stabilizing dorsal fin. All this suggests that Coccosteus was a good swimmer.
Probably he was also an aggressive hunter, for he had a joint system that enabled him to turn his head to catch up to prey. In addition, his jaws were rather long, so he could devour a larger prey.
