Coccyx

The coccyx (Latin and medically or coccyx coccyx ) of man is the caudal ( " tail directed towards " ) or lower portion of the spine and following the sacrum ( os sacrum ). It serves a number of ligaments and muscles of the pelvis, particularly the pelvis and the hip joints, as a starting point. The coccyx is composed of four to five Steißwirbeln but which are fused in most people through a single bone synostosis. The typical characteristics of vortices are formed largely back. The tailbone is regarded as a rudiment of the caudal vertebrae of vertebrates that have regressed in the course of human evolution over millions of years.

Typically caused by a fall on the buttocks or a swift kick to the shod foot against selbiges can dislocate or break the coccyx. Both injuries are very painful. Sufferers can barely sit because of the pain. Only when loading only one half of the pelvis is sitting bearable.

Steißbeinluxation

The dislocation of the coccyx is not well known and is therefore rarely diagnosed. Interested parties have until the correct diagnosis is often a long ordeal behind him. The treatment is done by introducing the index finger into the rectum. The therapist uses the coccyx with index finger and thumb from the inside from the outside and pulls it away from the sacral dorsal ( back down), while the sacrum is slightly pulled caudally (toward the feet ). If successful, an immediate relief sets. Often there are also severe pain left and right side of the sacrum. Affected is then possibly the sacroiliac joint.

Coccyx fracture

Symptom of a coccyx fracture (also called " tailbone fracture " ) is in addition to the severe pain when seated optionally a visible hematoma. Unlike the mere contusion of the coccyx and, as with a rare Steißbeinluxation on rectal examination can be a painful mobility of the coccyx be felt. The treatment is carried out by means of analgesics. To relieve a ring pillow can be used. A surgical treatment may be required for persistent painful instability ( coccydynia ). In this extremely rare case of a resection of the distal bone fragment is done.
