The Land of Cockaigne (from MHG sluraff = idlers, " The land of the lazy monkeys ", also Schlarraffenland or Hans Sachs Schlaweraffen Landt or Schlauraffenlandt ) is a fictional place from various fairy tales in which everything is available in abundance.

The motif

In the river beds of the paradise land of milk, honey or wine instead of water flow ( in allusion to Deuteronomy, for example, 6.3 (Deut 6.3 LUT) and many other places). All animals leaping and flying already pre-cooked and ready to bite through the air. The houses consist of cake. Instead of stones is cheese around. Enjoy is the greatest virtue of the inhabitants of paradise country, hard work and diligence are considered a sin. The age will be remedied by the fountain of youth, such as: What is an old woman has / the send them with in the bath / bathe hardly drey days / so is a young Dirnige darauß / vngefehr bey eight toes years.

Cockaigne is therefore used today usually transmitted to indicate a paradise of idleness and idle eating around recumbent.

The idea as such encounters in antiquity ( Greek Comedy, Lucian, Herodotus, Strabo ). As early as the 5th century BC there were similar ideas in the Greek poets Telekleides and Pherecrates ( Roasted thrushes flew with cupcakes A into the throat). The description of the Aetas Aurea in Virgil's fourth Eclogue already has traits of the later paradise Sage, but still missing the motif of abundance and debauchery. Middle of the 13th century was the French fabliau de Coquaigne that lived on in English and Dutch versions until the 15th century. Middle of the 14th century, Boccaccio 's Decameron describes in ( 3 Amendment to the 8th day ) a country called Bengodi, are in the wine, sausages, cheeses and other delicacies of nature in abundance available. In Germany the subject in the Shrovetide play of the 15th century appears before it in 1494 by the humanist Sebastian Brant as a parody of paradise, and as a critique of the of an increasingly secular clergy and functionless becoming nobility dominated feudal society in his Ship of Fools (Chapter 108) is designed. Later, it will be taken up in a poem by Hans Sachs.

A continuous tradition dates in text and images to the 19th century, when the Grimm brothers with The Tale of Cockaigne country that focuses less on the culinary aspects as generally satirical on the subject role reversal, and Ludwig Bechstein ( The Tale of the true liar in German fairy tale of 1845 and the brave little man begging in new German fairy tale book ) created the currently known versions of the tale.

In the bourgeois era, the motif of the enforcement of the civil power principle (nobility by virtue and power) against alleged decadence of hereditary nobility serves. Erich Kästner lets the protagonists of his children's book The 35th of May, or Conrad rides travel through the land of plenty in the South Seas.
