Cocody

The city is located in the Cocody district of Abidjan in the region Lagunes in the south of Ivory Coast. Prior to the 2002 decentralization Cocody was a district of that city Abidjan (now district).

Infrastructure

Cocody has an area of 64 km ², and had in 1998 according to the national electoral authorities 251 741 inhabitants. It is considered a very good area. In the fine residential areas along the Riviera Ebrié Lagoon, and the younger quarters of Deux Plateaux reside mainly diplomats, ambassadors, government officials and the wealthy. Accordingly, the image of spacious villas and country houses in the so-called colonial style is characterized, for which the city is known in architectural circles. The presidential residence is also located here and not in the capital, Yamoussoukro.

Also located in Cocody the State Université de Cocody, as well as some private universities. Other well-known company based in Cocody are the state radio, Radio Diffusion Télévision ivoirienne (RTI ), and the Hotel Ivoire, the only hotel in Africa, with an ice rink, the Pasteur Institute, which had been founded in 1972 and a huge two-story market hall in which everything is offered, what is there to buy African crafts.

History

The presidential residence of Laurent Gbagbo was besieged during the government crisis 2010/2011 on the morning of April 1st of units of the Forces Républicaines de Côte d' Ivoire.

Also, the headquarters of the state broadcaster, RTI, was hotly contested during the government crisis.
