Code rate

The information rate (also code rate or simply rate ) is a term of coding theory.

The rate of a block code of length alphabet, each code word indicates the transmitted information symbols compared to the length of the words:

This is true because the encoded data by encoding redundancy contained more than the uncoded data, that contain additional symbols. The redundancy is analogous. For linear codes, the code has exactly elements. Its rate is thus the ratio of the dimension of the code and the length of the words:
