Codepage 850

Code page 850 is a code page used by MS- DOS and PC DOS (hence also known as DOS Latin-1). It was introduced in 1987 with DOS 3.3.

It modifies the code page 437 to the effect that the Greek letters ( with the exception of β, which was also used for the German ß, and μ, which is used as a prefix for 10-6) and the mixed frame character ( from single and double frame sections exist ) have been removed and have been replaced by the missing in CP 437 characters from the ISO -8859- 1 character set.

This resulted in some DOS programs ( such as Norton Commander 3.0 ) to display errors, as these instead of frame character now showed letters. However, some programs recognize the code page and adjusted their presentation accordingly.

Due to the compatibility with the CP 437, the newly added characters are scattered a bit chaotic in the code page.

The code page 850 contains the following characters:

Example of ®: A ** 9 means A × 16 9 × 1 = 169 ( A is 10, B is 11, etc. )

The differences to the code page 437, highlighted in the above table are listed again in the following table:

Input method

On Windows, the characters in codepage 850 can be entered using the key combination Alt .

So referenced Alt 255 on the last character of the code page ( position F ** F), Alt 256 on the other hand generates the character at position 0 ** 0; so it will be again " started from scratch", so the numbers 3, 259 (3 256), 515 (3 256 256) and 771 (3 256 256 256), for example, are all on the filled heart ♥ ( position 0 ** 3) refer.

Code Page 858

A variant of the 850 code page with euro symbol was introduced in 1998 as a CP 858. In this code page, the " dotless i" (character D5hex ) was ( "i without dot " ) was replaced by the euro symbol. Adapted and correspondingly expanded font files were published for Caldera DR- DOS 7:03, IBM PC - DOS 7.0 & 2000 ( PC-DOS 7:00 Revision 1 ) and FreeDOS, but are also partly under another MS -DOS - compatible operating systems and Windows 95 / 98/Me usable. From free sources also adjusted CPI files for different printer series are available that - controlled by the code page switching logic of the operating system - the fonts in the printer (only for the newer printers that support CP 858 from the factory ), or so-called "Download support - fonts "to redefine the euro symbol in the printer.
