Description

The Greek text of this codex is highly valued by text critics, since it represents an early form of the Western text-type. This is particularly evident by the frequent interpolations and partly by the interpretive revisions in corrections to the text. Modern critical editions of the New Testament are created by the eclectic method, in which the preferred reading is determined based on the respective individual cases that present in the numerous versions of earlier manuscripts and versions. Within this process Claromontanus is often called in as a kind of " outside observer " when closely related (and interdependent ) codices with the letters of Paul are compiled: Codex Alexandrinus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus. Similarly, the Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis for the textual history of the Gospels and Acts is being used.

The Codex Claromontanus contains other valuable documents:

  • A stichometrischer catalog of the canon of the Old and New Testaments of unknown date was inserted in the Code. This list is missing Philippians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Hebrews. However, some works are included, which are not considered canonical today: Epistle of Barnabas, The Shepherd of Hermas, 3 Corinthians, Acts of Paul and Revelation of Peter.
  • On two Palimpsestblättern ( nos. 162 and 163) fragments of the Phaethon of Euripides with a Christian text have been overwritten. They were taken out of the Code and are in the Bibliothèque National under Cod Gr. 107 B kept.
